Transform Waste and All is (NOT) Well

Banksy's Classic Elephant..so apropos

Another sustainable article that tries to ignore the elephant in the room.

It is hard to read these facts without wanting to scream.

There is no way humans can continue to play the old game of make it, sell it, exploit the world,  grow rich.

Rich in what?

The whol;e story is a bad joke and I am thinking we can do better and must!
excerpt from aan article a friend FYI'D

"The global textile industry is valued at over $1 trillion, ranking as the second largest industry in terms of intensity of trade. Textiles are also the fastest growing sector in household waste. Discounting and low retail prices over the last two decades have led to a dramatic increase in the consumption of clothing, with a resultant rise in textile waste from the consumer. More than three million tons of textiles are thrown away each year in the EU alone.

To address this growing challenge of textile waste, VTT Technical Research Center of Finland and Aalto University are participating in an EU project called Trash-2-Cash. The project brings together designers, researchers, materials suppliers and textile manufacturers from all over Europe to solve the problem by recycling and development of high-performance fibers."

I had a feeling before I read it that this article  played the "justification" tuneg. Like recycling in general,  it avoids the issue of too much stuff, too many humans and lack of diversity in the economic, resource construct!

The smart discourse needs to take the larger picture and the details into focus at one time. This huge expansive vision is do-able if various experts got out of the safe, comfy zones and worked together to understand the complexities of what our species is facing. The old ego needs to step back, take a deep breath and leap into it's less defensive, open, vulnerable and loving side!

If more people moved out from ideas of owner/worker,  class -I mean really -that is so made up to support its own "reality" and tunnel, linear focus this species might really prove itself incredible!

The entangled energies and possiblities that arrive in Quantum Physics, the natural cycles, evolution and diversity for healthy ecosystems that environmental sciences explore and learning how beliefs  program our lives and can be changed - this kind of knowledge, if spread more widely, would certainly help us re-imagine a world that follows heart, soul, gut wisdom and is aligned with the super reality of a living planet, uni-verse.

So let us proceed!

So though this old hack of sensibility appears to be trying to maintain status quo utilizing  data and edited knowledge from the past, seems "normal" and comfortable it is not going to solve anything
AAAACCCCKKKKK-----

Thank you!  I needed that.

Kucinich at Hempfest

2011 Collector Poster by Cory & Catska Ench.

And so was the mayor, however Metro wasn't. The online bus planner told me that i could catch a #15 and walk 0.2 miles SW to Myrtle Edwards Park. However all the buses have been funneled down 3rd avenue and the stop wasn't just farther away but was in a creepy (to me) industrial part of town) It was ok for the coming but might be dicey on the exit.

I found out this stupid was the symptom of a bigger stupid, the tunnel. Tunnels on fault zones are a bad idea- humans cannot control the movements of Earth and we apparently disconnect old ideas of "progress" with new fangled "global warming." It is time that the wealth making of the few is exposed for the charlatan it is. Ever promoted as public good actions, they have instead led to fiscal imbalance, fraud and other economic ills that tie into all other health and welfare issues. Which leads back to the Hempfest. (medical marijuana, prison populations, fiber crops that use pesticides, synthetic fertilizers & herbicides harm all of us eventually)

Hemp is a fast growing, water friendly, pest lacking weed that makes for eco sane fibers These fibers can be woven and knit into clothing that makes sense. Like solar and wind power, some things have more plusses and fewer side effects than others, that is where technology can add to the benefits while spending less energy on mitigating the fall out. The focus and aim is better from the get. That is smart, however a lot of money still rides on the old agenda which is why some of us are feeling like Alice in Blunderland.

Fashion Propaganda

Vintage Buttons
Fashion history is full of a certain kind of propaganda. I am not talking advertisement and free (?) market idea proliferation or real designerly desire to fill a need (sportswear, warm coats)or a perceived need for something fresh, fun or shocking. That is juicy enough for another day.

No this is more along the lines of government interference like button laws (The Book of Buttons by Joyce Whittemore) and fabric color rules. With business and government holding hands for so long we have accepted or normed many things by the way they happened as if there is no other way for them to have come about.

As inventions have appeared almost simultaneously in different parts of the world without any special agenda other than the curious motivation of the inventor, I suspect we would be capable of wondrous things without this track. In fact an open systems approach would probably foster more brilliancy, not less.

Revival Friday

This in from the Ethical Fashion Forum. Sanyukta Shrestha has a fresh website and a culturally diverse design aesthetique.

This could be your recipe if your taste has been jaded by overtly marketable reruns that look like they are trying way too hard thus losing their spontaneity and spice.
........................................
The "too much becomes boring" onslaught of the fast fashion, designer rotation machine with all its hyper redux, lacks heart, & soul. Sustainable designers are bringing back real style for the discriminating palate. This is a good thing. Go tell aunt martha..
....................................
On that note please also consider the energy of thought, the power of being in the moment and the power of not wearing anothers grief. Sweatshop made, fast fashion is saturated with the energy of pain and that is not good for anyones health, environment or character.

the Victoria and Albert Museum

lecture oct 28th at SCCC -mom needs a tripod

along with people from the London College of Fashion joined forces to talk about ethical fashion October 27th..
Designers Sarah Ratty of Ciel, Christian Kemp-Griffin from Edun and Matilda Lee from the Ecologist were the guest speakers and the question of the day was “is green still the new black?”
The discussion was pointed towards trade and labor practices in the industry. The full house showed that people are aware and concerned.

However right now cheap clothing sales are rising. Quality and personal style are lost in the propaganda of a throw away world. Trouble is that when we throw away this world we pretty much go with it!

ignorance isn't bliss- its now just tacky denial.
